DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) — This year brought viewers a brand-new way to explore Central Illinois with WAND’s original series Around the 217, highlighting the people, places and stories that make the region unique.

Throughout the year, WAND’s Sean Streaty traveled across the area, uncovering hidden gems, local traditions, and meaningful history — offering viewers a closer look at what makes the 217 special.

The journey began on a cold February day at the African American History Museum of Decatur, where a powerful artifact took center stage: a hat once worn by civil rights icon Rosa Parks. Museum leaders say the piece represents peaceful protest and the enduring power of individual voices in the fight for justice.

From history to hospitality, the series celebrated Irish culture in Springfield at Darcy’s Pint, where an inspired menu and community atmosphere keep families coming back. Owner Hallie Pierceall said the idea was born after a trip to Ireland—and no Springfield staple would be complete without a classic horseshoe.

As spring arrived, Around the 217 stopped by the Springfield Clock Shop, where timepieces from generations past are carefully restored. Owner Christopher Crothers described the craft as repairing what time itself has done to clocks, blending art, science, and patience.

Warmer weather also meant spotlighting animals in need at the Macon County Animal Control and Care Center, including a unique cat colony space made possible by community support. Thousands of pets have found homes through partnerships like Radar’s Friends.

For truly one-of-a-kind animals, the series visited the Pandarosa Miniature Ranch in Dawson, home to trademarked “Panlanders” — a distinctive breed inspired by Highland cattle with panda-like coloring.

Nature lovers were taken to Allerton Park near Monticello, a scenic destination gifted by Robert Allerton and operated by the University of Illinois. From symmetrical gardens to iconic sculptures like the Sun Singer, the park remains a year-round escape.

When colder weather returned, Around the 217 headed indoors to the Children’s Museum of Illinois in Decatur, where interactive exhibits and programs help build confidence and curiosity for kids of all ages. Families say it’s a perfect place for children and grandparents alike.

The series also explored Illinois’ deep natural history at the Illinois State Museum, where visitors can walk through ice ages, prehistoric mammals, and geological change—bringing the state’s past vividly to life.

And finally, the year wrapped with music and local flavor at Danenberger Family Vineyard in New Berlin, which has grown into a regional destination by pairing wine with live performances on a newly added stage.

From history and heritage to food, fun, and nature, Around the 217 showcased the heart of Central Illinois—one story, one stop, and one community at a time.
