DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) — Decatur's former YWCA building will soon be a thing of the past.

At Monday night's meeting, the council approved the demolition of the facilities along North Main Street.

Decatur leaders say they've been working with the owners of the building since last January, when the building became an eyesore and a danger to the pubic. But they say the owners have refused to take action.

The council has already paid to remove asbestos from the site.

On Monday, the council approved a $345,000 demolition contract.

Mayor Julie Moore Wolfe said,"Most successful business have made mistakes and when they make mistakes — they pay the price. I think it is incredibly unfair that business people, who are local, are choosing to dump this back on the taxpayers of Decatur."

City Manager Tim Gleason says he hopes to pursue legal action against the building's owners to recoup the approximately $550,000 spent in taxpayer money.
