DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) - Local labor unions are gearing up to celebrate Labor Day by marching through downtown Decatur and donating thousands of dollars to area charities.
The Mid-Illinois Labor Council will host its annual Labor Day Parade at 10 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 7, in downtown Decatur. This year's theme is "Celebrating 250 Years of Hope & Solidarity," featuring Grand Marshal Andy Clark, a retired United Steelworkers member with over 40 years of service.
Following the parade, a "Picnic in the Park" will be held at Fairview Park. General admission is $25 (free for sponsoring union members) and includes food, drinks, and games.
During the picnic at 1 p.m., unions will distribute $18,000 in grants to 22 local charities through the "We Are One Community" fund. Established in 2011, the donor-advised fund allows working families to pool their charitable contributions. Because local unions cover all administrative fees, 100% of individual donations go directly to community services.
This year's top grant recipients include Meals on Wheels ($2,000), the Good Samaritan Inn ($1,500), and Big Brothers/Big Sisters ($1,500).
