DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) — The Decatur Family YMCA will host their annual Backpack Attack event on Saturday, August 2.
2,000 backpacks filled with school supplies will be given out to students entering kindergarten through 6th grade.
Backpacks can be picked up at the Decatur Family YMCA, John's Hill Magnet School (drive-up location) and the Macon County Health Department.
"Backpack Attack is more than just school supplies — it's about setting students up for success from day one," said Decatur Family YMCA Director of Development and Marketing Danielle Diskey. "We're able to provide not only backpacks but also the physical and mental support students need to walk into the classroom confident and ready to learn."
The pickup event will be from 9 to 11 a.m. The YMCA says students should be present to pick out their backpacks.
The Macon County Health Department will also provide school-required immunizations, screenings and a health fair from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Services are on a first-come, first-served basis.
