DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) - Students from Eisenhower High School in Decatur got to try their hand at selecting popcorn flavors that will be sold at the Airport Plaza Kroger's popcorn kiosk.
The store has had a kiosk for about a month, and it is already the number one in popcorn sales for Kroger' Central Division.
The Airport Plaza popcorn team pops the treat every day, offering as many as 40 flavors.
Kroger’s Central Division sells more popcorn than any stores across the country. Through sales at the Airport Plaza store, Decatur is the top popcorn city in all of Kroger. Store Leader Jeff Tate said he “knew store-made popcorn would be popular,” but its appeal “grew even faster than I expected.”
Kroger is connecting with local high schools. Wednesday morning, students from the Principal’s Advisory Council at Eisenhower High School visited the Airport Plaza store to select their own special blend.
Students started earlier, already selecting as many as seven popcorn flavors as the potential ingredients. At Wednesday’s meeting, they sampled varieties to choose their own mixture of two or three flavors. They created what they call “Panther Spice”. It contains White Cheddar and Sweet Chili 5 Alarm.
The Eisenhower students will then name the blend which will carry custom stickers.
Kroger will offer the same opportunity to Mount Zion High School, inviting its students to create a Braves blend.
