DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) — The Decatur community gathered Saturday to remember Andreas "Dre" Woodland, a 5-year-old boy who tragically lost his life on Thanksgiving Day. His mother aims to turn unimaginable tragedy into purpose.

Dre was known for his shining personality, infectious energy, contagious smile, and a passion for Hot Wheels that is unrivaled.

In the midst their grief, Dre's family has launched the Dre Forever 5 Foundation, which will host annual Christmas toy drives to support families during their hardest seasons.

The foundation's first toy drive and community giveaway took place at Dre's visitation, with toy donations requested in lieu of flowers.

Thomas Walker, owner of Walker Funeral Services and Chapel explained that the family's goal is to bring joy to all — just like Dre did every day.

"She [Dre's mother] is doing it for him, but she's also doing it for others. He's not here, but he will never leave her heart, so she's going to remember him by giving to others," Walker said.

They will be accepting gift donations up until Christmas Eve, when they plan on giving the gifts to local families in need.
