SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) – State officials are recognizing the critical role of emergency dispatchers during National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week, observed April 12–18, 2026.

The Illinois State Fire Marshal and Illinois State Police are joining together to honor the professionals who answer emergency calls and help coordinate lifesaving responses across the state.

“Telecommunicators are the calm, steady voice in moments of crisis,” said State Fire Marshal Michele Pankow. “Their professionalism and dedication ensure help is sent quickly when seconds matter most.”

The Illinois State Police’s Telecommunication Services Bureau operates six communication centers statewide, with about 115 telecommunicators handling both routine and emergency calls. Officials say those dispatchers managed roughly 650,000 calls for service last year alone.

ISP Director Brendan F. Kelly emphasized the importance of their role, calling telecommunicators “the first link in the chain of emergency response” and a vital support system for officers in the field.

National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week is observed each year during the second week of April, recognizing the individuals who often serve as the first point of contact in emergencies and help bring order to chaotic situations.

State leaders are encouraging residents to take time this week to thank telecommunicators for their service and dedication.
