SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) - The Law Enforcement Torch Run made its way through the Capitol City Wednesday afternoon.
Officers collectively ran over 1,500 miles carrying the Flame of Hope for the Special Olympics.
Retired Illinois State Police Master Sergeant Diane Vanderkooy said it began as a way for officers to connect with the people they serve.
"It was a way for our police officers to give back to the community, be a part of the community and be of service to the Special Olympics athletes of Illinois," Vanderkooy said.
This leg of the run will end at the Special Olympics Illinois Summer Games in Normal, which will kick off Friday.
