SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND)- Lincoln Park in Springfield is getting a makeover. The park's redevelopments aim to cultivate an environment where everyone's physical needs are met.Â
Â
"The current playground may have some barriers that would prevent people with physical disabilities from enjoying parts of the playground. So, this new playground will be accessible to all members of our community," said Executive Director Derek Harms.Â
Â
A $600,000 Department of Natural Resources grant is funding the renovation project. Harms said there is no local financial match required for the project, so this initiative is fully funded. These advancements bring the fun to children and adults, especially meeting their physical needs.
Â
Sensory features such as sound-making panels and textured surfaces are on the playground to aid children with sensory processing challenges. Other park upgrades include large park shelters, LED lighting fixtures, a multi-court play area and more trees.Â
Â
"Lincoln Park is one of our largest, most active parks in our community. So really excited about this opportunity. There are several items that we're going to be able to make improvements for the community through grant funds," Harms said.Â
Â
Springfield Park District will be applying for another grant to improve Dreamland Park next. In a couple of weeks, they will be hosting a public hearing, asking the public for input on thoughts and ideas.Â
