DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) - From just a tenth of an acre to over five acres of land, the Good Samaritan Inn Mercy Gardens held a ribbon-cutting Wednesday for its expanded land.
Mercy Gardens helps provide fresh, local produce in Decatur, just off the Old King's Orchard Neighborhood.
Much of the harvest is also used for the Good Samaritan Inn's daily meal program.
Tanya Melendez, executive director of Good Samaritan Inn, said that something like this is the most important part of building sustainable food sources for communities in need.
"One of the most important things when we think about our food system is sustainability. And this is the foundation of a sustainable food system. Of being able to grow your own food, feed the community, and really be able to help a lot of people," Melendez said.
