African American Heritage Trail marker ribbon-cutting 12/4/25

DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) - A new addition to recognize Macon County's rich history.

The second marker on the county's African American Heritage Trail was unveiled Thursday and is located behind Parsons Elementary School.

The marker honors Judge James Benton Parsons and Black educators from Decatur public schools.

Parsons Elementary Principal Holly Kitson said these markers are great additions for the community's kids.

"It's important for our kids to see men and women from Decatur being honored that represent them and their cultures and community, and seeing the great things that they have accomplished," Kitson said.

Parsons was the first Black federal district court judge in the United States.
