SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) - One local middle schooler proved he's one of the best in Illinois when it comes to chess.

Veer is an eighth grader at Franklin Middle School in Springfield.

At a state chess tournament, District 186 said Veer was undefeated after eight games and made it to the championship match.

The game ended in a draw, securing veer a second-place spot.

He was one of only two in the tournament who were undefeated among more than 300 players.

Two Springfield sixth graders also earned bronze medals in their division.
