SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — The moment many families have waited and prayed for came to fruition on Tuesday.
"Finally, after so many years, we are citizens of America! Now, we're living the dream!" said Kristine Leones, while smiling with husband and baby.
For Leones, and 58 other candidates, today was the culmination of hard work, tests, and preparation.
The Old State Capitol was filled with candidates and families for a naturalization ceremony on Tuesday. During this moment, 59 candidates took the oath and pledged their allegiance to the United States of America.
The incredibly joyous, and emotional, day was a dream for so many. "America has always been my dream country!" shouted Vaneck Mambola, who grew up in Africa.
Leones and her family are from the Philippines, and have dreamed of starting their careers in America. "Since I was a child, I've dreamt about America and being a healthcare professional here."
These are only a handful of those excited to begin this next chapter of their lives in the United States, as citizens.
United States District Judge Colleen Lawless presented the motion. "We welcome your cultures and traditions, as well as your ideas, dreams, and special skill sets."
With the thud of the gavel, Illinois welcomed its newest citizens for an afternoon of emotions, and pride.
