URBANA, Ill. (WAND) — The Urbana City Council has unanimously approved funding to support staffing for an overnight shelter serving people experiencing homelessness in the area.

Council members approved $37,000 to cover daytime staffing costs for the shelter located on East Park Street in Champaign. The shelter operates out of the former National Guard Armory and provides overnight accommodations during the colder months.

City officials say the funding will ensure the shelter remains properly staffed during the day while it continues to serve guests overnight. The shelter is scheduled to remain open through April.

The money will come from a previously approved budget amendment, meaning no new funding sources were required for the staffing support.

City leaders say the shelter plays a critical role in keeping vulnerable residents safe during the winter and early spring months.
