MATTOON, Ill. (WAND) - It was a quiet Saturday. For many families in Trilla, households were getting ready for Easter company. All it took was a single sound to shake the town.
"You could feel the boom shake our house..." Kynnedi Goldstein said with a look of horror.Â
The Goldsteins were just feet away from County Road 1400 North, where a deadly plane crash made impact. The crash happened around 10:15am Saturday morning. "I just heard a big boom, and then the power went out..." explained Ed Goldstein. Â
Next to the Goldsteins, Sally Dickerson's house heart the sound and outside her window, saw the black smoke billow into the sky. Dickerson is stunned at how close it was to her home.
"Just being a quarter of a mile down the road is a little nerve wracking to think of..." Dickerson said.
With bits of wreckage left on the road, and shattered glass hidden within the grass, it's a somber sight to pass on the road. Two flowers have been planted, in honor of the victims.Â
"Knowing that these people have passed away... it hits different knowing it's so close to your home," Kynnedi Goldstein said.
Hours and days following the crash, neighbors like the Goldsteins and Dickersons are reflecting, praying for loved ones, and hugging family members tighter than ever.Â
"I just feel so sorry for the families," Dickerson said.
