Fire Truck lights

DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) - One person was hospitalized and a pet died following a house fire on Friday morning.

Decatur firefighters were dispatched to a home in the 1600 block of North Oakland Avenue around 9:10 a.m. following reports of a residential fire with a resident possibly trapped inside.

Upon arrival, crews encountered heavy smoke and flames coming from the house. The resident was located safely outside of the home.

Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze and searched the property, where they located a deceased pet.

The resident was transported by ambulance to Decatur Memorial Hospital for medical evaluation.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Decatur Fire Department.
