Dive team called out for water rescue in Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) - A 34-year-old man pulled from Lake Springfield Tuesday afternoon has died.

Springfield's dive team was called out for a water rescue in the 400 block of East Lake Shore Dr. The team utilized a brand new piece of equipment to help extract the man who had been underwater in the lake for five minutes.

The Chief's office told WAND that the department had just acquired a new piece of equipment called a Rapid Diver. It is a small air canister that allows rescuers to enter the water faster than ever before.

A firefighter on scene was able to use the canister and jump into the lake in his full uniform to pull the man to the surface.

The man had no pulse when he was pulled out, but EMS was able to revive him on the scene. He was than taken to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead by hospital staff.

His identity is being withheld until next of kin notification.

The death remains under investigation by the Sangamon, County Coroner’s Office and the Springfield Police Department.
