Rantoul, IL- A nationally recognized American hero came to Rantoul Saturday to encourage women in aviation.
Major L. Tammy Duckworth was one of the few army women to pilot a Blackhawk Helicopter. She lost her legs during a 2004 mission in Iraq. Instead of retiring, Duckworth continues to serve in the National Guard, while dedicating her life to public service.
Saturday, she spoke at the second annual "Women with Wings" event at Rantoul's Chanute Air Museum. The event featured all aspects of aviation, including a giant hot air balloon.
Duckworth says she hopes the women at the event, will help others take an interest in aviation.
"I would hope these women encourage their daughters to think about flying, not just as a career, but as something to try to do," Duckworth said, "because if you can do this, you can do anything."
"I want to instill the desire to encourage young people to try new things," she said.
"Women with Wings" was co-sponsored by the Chanute Air Museum, and the University of Illinois Institute of Aviation.
