CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WAND) — A Champaign man has been arrested in connection with a fire that caused thousands of dollars in damage to a local church.

On Thursday, the Champaign Police Department arrested Dalton Whitlock, 33, on initial charges of arson to a place of worship.

The incident occurred on November 19, 2025, at 12:28 p.m., when the Champaign Police and Fire Departments responded to a fire at a church located in the 1600 block of Bloomington Road.

Fire crews reported moderate smoke coming from the roof and windows at the top of the sanctuary. As firefighters worked to contain the flames, the situation escalated, and the incident was upgraded to a two-alarm fire.

Multiple hose lines were extended, and both Champaign and Urbana Fire Department personnel worked together to bring the blaze under control.

Investigators from both departments launched an investigation into the cause of the fire. While the exact circumstances of ignition are still under review, evidence led to the identification and interview of Whitlock.

Authorities say the investigation is ongoing. Anyone with additional information is asked to contact the Champaign Police Department at 217-351-4545.
