SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) - A former Springfield police sergeant who pleaded guilty to being drunk behind the wheel and crashing into a motorcycle was sentenced to 180 days behind bars Friday.

Two people were left with serious injuries in September 2024 after Michael Egan hit their motorcycle on East Lake Shore Drive.

Officers at the scene said Egan failed to yield the right of way and made a left turn in front of the motorcycle. The passenger on the bike was Chelsey Farley.

"I hope those pipes drive you crazy for the rest of your life," Farley said in court Jan. 30.

Farley sustained severe injuries and was placed in a medically-induced coma. During this time, her sister Caitlin Weiss became one of her advocates.

"You will go on. But this will haunt her and us all. Chelsea can thankfully walk, talk, play with her children and live her life, but not without remembering the lasting trauma, lifetime pain and consequences that you handed her," Weiss said.

Egan pleaded guilty to aggravated DUI in November. He is sentenced to 90 days in the Sangamon County Jail up front and two years of probation. If he violates his probation, he will serve another 90 days. He will also be required to serve 300 hours of community service and make a $5,000 donation to Mothers Against Drunk Driving.

Following the investigation, multiple Springfield police officers were disciplined for how they handled the investigation.

Members of Illinois Abate showed their support, some of them calling for a harsher sentence.

"This was an individual who served 20 years of law enforcement, saw the aftermath of how many of these types of collisions himself, yet still consciously made the choice to get that level of intoxicated and caused this level of injury to our community," said Josh Witkowski.
