URBANA, Ill. (WAND) -- An early-morning fight near a campus bar prompted an emergency notification to University of Illinois students and staff Sunday.
Around 2:15 a.m. on Feb. 15, officers with the University of Illinois Police Department responded to The Canopy Club, 708 S. Goodwin Ave., to assist the Urbana Police Department with a report of a fight in progress.
When officers arrived, there was no active altercation, and people were leaving the area.
During the investigation, officers learned that an individual allegedly brandished a firearm during the disturbance before fleeing the scene. The report of a weapon prompted an Illini-Alert emergency notification to be sent out to the campus community.
University police searched the surrounding area while Urbana officers continued investigating. Authorities later determined the suspect was no longer in the area, and an all-clear notification was issued.
The incident remains under investigation, with the Urbana Police Department serving as the lead agency.
Police are asking anyone with information, including witnesses or individuals with security or surveillance footage from the area, to contact the Urbana Police Department at 217-384-2320. Witnesses who wish to remain anonymous can call Champaign County Crime Stoppers at 217-373-8477 (373-TIPS) or submit a tip online at 373tips.com.
