Springfield McDonald's

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — A man arrested after a deadly shooting has been granted pretrial release.

Nicholas J. Kammueller, 46, was arrested Tuesday night after a crash in the 2000 block of North Dirksen Parkway.

As Springfield officers arrived, they heard multiple gunshots and found 51 year-old Jerald P. Fahey on the ground near the drive thru area of a McDonald's. Fahey was rushed to the hospital but did not survive.

According to SPD, a woman who was involved in the North Dirksen crash had called Fahey for help. He came to check on her, but was shot when he approached the driver of the other vehicle involved in the crash.

Officers identified Kammueller as a driver involved in the crash and a suspect in the shooting. He was arrested and taken to the Sangamon County Jail.

In court on Thursday Kammueller made his first appearance and pleaded not guilty to a DUI charge. State's Attorney John Milhiser told WAND News that Kammueller's case is still under investigation by SPD and more charges may come later.

Kammueller was granted pretrial release on Thursday under the conditions that he have no alcohol or firearms. He returns to court on May 8.
