EFFINGHAM, Ill. (WAND) - An Effingham man was arrested over the weekend after police say he barricaded himself in a home with a machete.

The Effingham Police Department said that it received a call around 5 p.m. Sunday at a home along North 4th Street for an assault with a machete.

That is near the New Life United Pentecostal Church.

Effingham police stated that officers found one person inside with minor injuries. There was also a child on the main floor who was taken to safety.

Police said that an Effingham man, later identified as 39-year-old William Allen, had barricaded himself inside the home for around two hours.

After officers tried multiple times to get Allen to leave the home, he eventually gave himself up without incident.

Allen was taken to a local hospital for evaluation and then to the Effingham County Jail.

He faces charges of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, domestic battery with a previous conviction and resisting/obstructing a peace officer.

Allen was denied pretrial release, and he will remain in custody at the Effingham County Jail.
