BLOOMINGTON, Ill. (WAND) — Illinois State Police released police video after Bloomington police shot and killed a 15-year-old boy in February.
On Feb. 25 officers were called to the 800 block of Arcadia Drive shortly before 5 p.m. after several people reported seeing someone with a weapon.
One video, from police dashcam, shows an officer arriving to find the teen running down a driveway to a parking lot near the rear of an apartment building. The officer radio's a description before making contact with the teen. The video shows the teen holding what appears to be a gun in his waistband. The officer repeatedly tells the teen to put the gun down.Â
ISP blurred the teens face, citing the boy's age.Â
Warning: The video may be difficult to watch. Viewer discretion is advised.
As the teen moves behind a car he begins talking with the officer. The officer asks his name and asks the teen to show him his hands. The conversation is somewhat calm between the teen and the officer but approximately 10 minutes after the officer made contact several shots ring out.Â
ISP said Bloomington officers fired their weapons after the teen pointed his gun at them. It was later discovered the teen had a Sig Sauer P365 Air Pistol. It's not clear if he ever fired it. ISP also hasn't said how many shots police fired.
Body worn camera from an officer shows the officer attempting to remain calm with the teen telling him repeatedly, "We can work through that," and "We will work through the trouble stuff." The words from the teen are hard to hear, but at one point the teen said, "If I point this at you will you shoot me." The officer responds by saying, "We don't want to shoot you."
Late in the back-and-forth the teen begins yelling. The officer says "You're going to get shot if you don't drop that gun."
After gunshots, several officers moved in to provide help. The teen died at the scene.
The teen's family was given the opportunity to review the footage before it was released to the public.
Bloomington police contacted ISP to take over the investigation.Â
