SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — The murder trial of a former Sangamon County Sheriff's deputy, who fatally shot Sonya Massey last summer in her home, will be heard October 20 in Peoria County.
On April 8, Sangamon County Circuit Judge Ryan Cadagin ruled the trial would be moved out of the capital city to Peoria because of intense publicity. Judge Cadagin granted the request by defense attorneys for Sean Grayson. Prosecutors offered no objection to moving the trial.
During Wednesday's hearing the trial date was set with a pre-trial date of June 6.
Grayson, 30, faces charges of first-degree murder, aggravated battery with a firearm and official misconduct for the July 6, 2024, shooting of Massey, 36, who police said had called 911 to report a suspected prowler.
Grayson is being held without bond despite a state appellate court ruling that the Pre-Trial Fairness Act, which eliminated cash bond in Illinois, dictates that he should be released with certain conditions. The matter is before the state Supreme Court.
Massey's death sparked a civil rights investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice and led to the formation of the Massey Commission in Sangamon County. Both have brought change to Sangamon County and the sheriff's department, including new hiring practices, mental health awareness, and greater transparency and accountability. Earlier this year, Sangamon County and the Massey Family agreed to a $10 million settlement.
