DECATUR, ILL. (WAND) — After being open for 109 years, the Avon Theater has closed its doors.
The owner Skip Huston died on Jan. 31st of this year. Combining the loss of Skip and some financial struggles, his family decided to make the decision to close the business.Â
Community members said that this wasn't just a movie theater, it was an experience.Â
"But what I remember most about Skip's theater several years ago, and I went with one of my sons when they were younger, was (Skip) coming out and making that announcement. 'Phones off, enjoy your time,'" recalled Decatur City Councilman Ed Culp. "It was kind of, you know, given society, giving everybody in the audience a break from society."Â
Sue James, a regular Avon Theater patron, thought back to some of the first films she saw at the theater.
"When they started showing the, the original Star Wars trilogy, I wanted to see it again on the big screen ... But my kids who were teenagers by this time, hadn't seen it at the big screen. And they went and they were won over," said James.Â
Now that the Avon has closed its doors, the community feels the loss.
"It's very sad to see it go, because it's something that my grandkids have grown up with and that people in the community love to go and see," said Decatur Area Convention and Visitors Bureau Executive Director Teri Hammel.Â
Others said that they're thankful for all the movies and joy the Avon has given them over time.Â
"I'm also grateful for the many years that I could go to the Avon Theater and enjoy that film and see my neighbors. And I know in the coming years, there's going to be another treasured place that will emerge," said Decatur City Councilman David Horn.Â
