DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) – The Avon Theater, a cherished staple of the Decatur community, has announced it will close its doors, marking an the end of an era for local moviegoers.

The family-owned theater, has been part of the Huston family for over 25 years. Last month, Skip Huston, who liked to be referred to as the "Head Honcho," died suddenly. 

A Facebook post announcing the closing said the financial strain had become too much, even with support from the community through a GoFundMe.

For decades, the Avon Theater stood as a testament to the magic of movies, offering everything from blockbuster hits to indie gems. Generations of families walked through its doors, creating lasting memories.

“Thank you for all the years of support. This is the end of an unforgettable chapter, but the memories we’ve made here will live on forever. We will forever be grateful for the love and community that the Avon Theater has brought to our family,” the family shared.
