DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) — A Decatur man, Mark Miller Jr., has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for aggravated animal cruelty, according to court documents in Macon County.

WAND News previously reported that Miller had pleaded guilty to his charges.

A concerned citizen had reported to Macon County deputies about five dogs left outside during extreme cold on December 23, 2022. At that time, the base temperature was 1 degree with a wind chill of negative 16.

One dog was found nearly dead and had to be euthanized at the University of Illinois Veterinary Clinic in Urbana.

According to court documents, Miller must serve at least half his sentence and 6 months of mandatory supervised release. Aggravated cruelty to animals is a class 4 felony that has a sentencing range of up to three years.
