DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) — A Decatur man has pleaded guilty to aggravated cruelty to animals after five dogs were left outside in extreme cold conditions late 2022.

Mark Miller, Jr. was charged after a concerned citizen reported animals suffering from extreme cold at a property on North Taylor Rd. on December 23, 2022. At that time, the base temperature was 1 degree with a wind chill of negative 16.

Macon County deputies said they found five dogs who did not have shelter from the cold. An American Bulldog was nearly dead and ultimately had to be euthanized at the University of Illinois Veterinary Clinic in Urbana.

Aggravated cruelty to animals is a class 4 felony that has a sentencing range of up to three years. Miller will be sentenced at the end of next month.
