DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) — It's a call to action. Decatur Public Schools has asked churches, organizations and community partners to help hold parents accountable.
This call stems from a recent fight inside Stephen Decatur Middle School that involved students as well as parents. A district employee told WAND News a parent used mace spray on students during the fight. Decatur Police Chief Shane Brandel said the department will arrest people involved in the fight.
"We are going to hold the parent accountable to the degree that we can and I absolutely expect parents to be arrested as it relates to this incident."

Superintendent Dr. Rochelle Clark called churches, organizations and leaders in the community together on Thursday morning to ask for help. She said complications at home and lack of support at home have lead to issues inside the schools.
"We need parents to what?," she asked the crowd. "To parent, and we've got your back."
So far the district has expelled 23 students, not including those involved in the Jan. 25 fight at Stephen Decatur. Dr. Clark anticipates action to be taken regarding those involved.
Community pastors stepped up to the microphone to rally support for the district. Bishop James A. Wills, President of Illinois Pastors Coalition, said it's time to stop talking and start acting.
"Here in Decatur we are working together, we are fighting together and we are going to win together too."
WAND News asked the district about safety in the schools since parents have reached out to the station to express their concerns regarding student safety. Dr. Clark assured that the schools are safe.
"I don't think there is a problem. It's the same kids and they are with each other. They aren't targeting or anything like that, but we have to work with that small group of kids that are making the rest look like the district is out of control. Our kids are safe coming to schools. Our kids are loved and we have great opportunities for them."
Last year, the district hired a Safety and Security Administrator. Since that hire, Dr. Clark said the district has built up its security team. There are 36 security personnel and there are 4 School Resource Officers.
