DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) – Excitement filled the air as Decatur Public Schools welcomed two international teachers, a milestone that district leaders said will bring both educational and cultural enrichment to classrooms.
“This is a moment of pure joy,” said Superintendent Dr. Rochelle Clark. “My kids are in for such a beautiful school year with so much learning."
The International Teacher Program is designed to fill critical teaching vacancies while offering students a unique opportunity to learn from educators around the globe. Teachers in this program bring years of experience to Decatur, along with stories, perspectives, and traditions from their home countries.
"Not only are they going to bring enrichment to our students, but our students are going to get the opportunity to ask questions and learn about a country that they may not get an opportunity to visit," Dr. Clark said.
The latest arrivals, on Tuesday, included two teachers from the Philippines. Their journey to Decatur was made possible through a partnership with Peoria Public Schools, which serves as the host district for the J-1 visa program.
“I know this is a huge opportunity for them. But it's also going to be such a rewarding gift for us," said Monica Wilks, DPS Director of Human Resources.
Wilks said the initiative is already having a measurable impact. After implementing new recruiting strategies, the district reduced its vacancy rate from 22 percent to 9 percent in just one year.
“Our students need consistency,” she said. “They need to see the same teacher in front of them all year long. This program allows us to give them that while also giving them something extra."
International teachers bring an average of nine years of experience. Many will also organize cultural activities to immerse students in international learning.
Wilks said teachers can stay with the district for up to five years, allowing them to truly bond with students and the community.
“This isn’t a short-term fix, it’s a real commitment,” she said.
DPS leaders believe the program will not only strengthen learning outcomes but also leave a lasting impact on students by opening doors to the world, without ever leaving Decatur.
