URBANA, Ill. (WAND) — Urbana 116 Board of Education approved a plan to improve its disciplinary procedures to decrease the number of expulsions and suspensions.

This comes after the district ranks in the 20% of schools in the state considered "exclusionary" in their discipline practices. "Exclusionary" discipline practices include in- and out-of-school suspensions and expulsions.

The district is also acting to decrease the racial disproportionality in discipline practices.

In the 2024 school year, 109 out of the 952 white students were expelled or suspended, a total of 11% of the white student population. In comparison, 892 students of color out of the total 3,182 students of color population were expelled or suspended, 28% of that group of students.

This will be added to their Discipline Improvement Plan, which they have been enacting since 2023.

The updated plan includes a tiered response. In Tier 1, students who are struggling will be taught restorative practices and positive behavioral interventions. Tier 2 is for at-risk students who will be given social-emotional learning interventions. In Tier 3, students with chronic behavioral issues will get one-on-one support.

School officials hope these tiered interventions will help students with consistent behavior problems. Their goal is to teach the students how to control their behavior, preventing recurring issues.
