DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) — The ATF has implemented a new rule which basically closes the so-called gun-show loophole. It now requires background checks when guns are sold at shows or on the internet.
The new rule will not have an impact on Illinois gun sales because gun laws here are tougher than the federal regulations. Nationwide, it won’t have much of an impact because vendors at gun-shows are usually already licensed and can perform instant background checks.
It is considered the largest expansion of background checks since 1993.
The rule makes clear that anyone who sells firearms predominantly to earn a profit must be federally licensed and conduct background checks, regardless of whether they are selling on the internet, at a gun show or at a brick-and-mortar stores, according to Attorney General Merrick Garland.
