CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WAND) — A home invasion turns deadly in Champaign after a homeowner fires his weapon.
On November 10, around 4:10 a.m., Champaign Police went to a house in the 1200 block of Harrington Drive after receiving a report of a home invasion.
Officers said they located two men hurt at the house and began to administer emergency aid with the help of crews from the Champaign Fire Department.
The resident of the home had non-life-threatening gunshot wounds to the arm and was transported to a local hospital, where he remains in stable condition.
The other man, who did not live at the home, died at the scene. The Champaign County Coroner later identified him as Emmanuel Becerril-Perez, a 21-year-old of Urbana.
Police said the initial investigation showed the homeowner fired multiple shots at the intruder and got hurt during the struggle.
The Champaign Police are still investigating, including processing physical evidence and canvassing surrounding residents for witnesses and video of investigative value. They ask if you have any information to contact them. No arrests have been made at this time.Â
All individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
