I-74 WB traffic diverted due to dust storm

UPDATE 5:19 p.m.

Traffic on Interstate 74 West has been opened at Exit 159 and is now being diverted at Route 136 at Exit 152 and being sent west on Route 136 to Route 51. Illinois State Police say that heavy dust storms have diminished visibility.

FARMER CITY, Ill. (WAND) — Traffic on Interstate 74 West is being diverted at Farmer City due to a dust storm.

Illinois State Police report that there is zero visibility west of Farmer City. Traffic can proceed along Route 150.

Traffic is backing up, so drivers should find alternate routes if possible.

WAND Chief Meteorologist Jim Kosek said that the combination of dry topsoil, recently plowed fields and gusty winds will create blowing dust over parts of central Illinois this afternoon.

Drivers caught in a dust storm should pull off the road as far as possible, turn off all lights, set the emergency break, and stay inside their vehicle with seatbelts on according to ISP.
