SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — State representatives were in session for less than an hour Sunday despite making the trip to the capitol through the hazardous snow and ice conditions.

House Republican leaders told reporters House Democrats are not using their time wisely. They argued that lawmakers never needed to come back to Springfield in the first place.

"Lame duck is not the time to push through mine, or the House speaker's, or the governor's initiatives without having everybody at the table. That's the problem," said House GOP Leader Tony McCombie (R-Savanna). "Here, you've got the rule of 60 in the Democratic caucus. It's one party one rule over and over again, decade after decade. You don't have all of the parties together. So, you know what's going to happen over the 104th General Assembly. We're going to do a trailer bill and another trailer bill to clean up the crap that comes out this week."

Rep. CD Davidsmeyer (R-Jacksonville) said he is concerned that Illinois faces a $3.2 billion budget deficit for Fiscal Year 2026, but many Democrats want to continue spending.

"I think we really need to dial down and focus on the citizens of the state of Illinois and make sure that we're taking care of our needs first before we venture out and try to do anything different," Davidsmeyer said.

Davidsmeyer explained he plans to file a bill to repeal the Illinois law that currently prevents law enforcement from working alongside federal immigration officials. He stressed that this change could allow Illinois to focus on services for residents instead of migrants and asylum seekers.
