CHARLESTON, Ill. (WAND) — The city of Charleston announced that the Rotary Community Aquatic Center will stay closed for the rest of the 2026 summer season after suffering extensive storm damage.
The city said parks and recreation staff have been working to clean the facility, remove debris, drain the pools, and complete a thorough assessment of damage done after an EF-2 tornado hit Charleston on June 17.
According to the parks and recreation department, while every effort was made to possibly reopen this summer, the extent of the repairs, required inspections, contractor availability, and the time needed to safely restore the facility have made reopening during the 2026 season impossible.
"Our priority has always been the safety of our guests and staff," Parks and Recreation Director Diane Ratliff said. "While we know this is disappointing news for our community, we are committed to restoring the Rotary Community Aquatic Center safely and responsibly so it is ready to welcome families back for the 2027 season."
Season pass holders can either utilize Mattoon's Lytle Pool for the remainder of the summer with their Rotary membership or contact the parks and recreation department to have their 2026 membership moved to 2027. Punch card holders can exchange their remaining punches for equivalent daily admission passes at Lytle Pool.
The parks and recreation department said it will continue working to complete repairs and prepare the facility for reopening next summer. Updates regarding the repair progress and membership options will be shared through the department's website and social media channels.Â
