DANVILLE, Ill. (WAND) — A Danville church teamed up with Walmart to help families in need as SNAP benefits were cut at the start of November.
The Mosaic City Church hosted "Blessing on the Blacktop." Free groceries were handed out to families in need on a first come, first served basis.
The event had enough bags to support 75 families, with $50 worth of groceries per family.
"In response to the government shutdown and the high price of groceries, we decided that as a church, we needed to help our community," said Pastor LeStan Hoskins. "We wanted to be a light and a beacon of hope to those who felt like this was going to impact them greatly."
The church said they will host a bigger food drive later in November at the Mosaic City Church.
