DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) - Communities across Central Illinois were celebrating Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday.

The Metro Decatur Black Chamber of Commerce hosted a church service, which served as a way to commemorate the life and legacy of King and to bridge the gap between different community groups.

Bishop James Wills said it's something that helps make the community a place for everyone.

"We wanna come together and have one voice. We want to be able to make our community a safe place for everyone. We're dealing with a lot of violence in our city, so we wanna come together and have communication and conversation," Wills said.

Aside from prayer, the service also included performances from dance teams and a choir.
