speed limit sign

DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) — The city of Decatur is adding eight new radar speed signs in multiple "high-concern" areas.

The signs will display a driver's speed, which the city said will serve as a visual reminder of their current speed compared to the posted limit.

According to the city, studies show that many drivers slow down when they see their displayed speed, and overall compliance with the posted speed limit goes up by 30-60%.

The city said the signs can be moved to carious locations as needed. The initial spots include:

  • West Main Street, between Dipper Lane and Fairview Avenue
  • North MacArthur Road, between Pershing Road and Mound Road
  • West Mound Road, between MacArthur Road and Route 51
  • East Mound Road, between Martin Luther King Drive and Woodford Street

The city said it can also receive data and speed trends from the signs, which will allow officials to measure their effectiveness.
