CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WAND) — Former University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign Chancellor Michael Aiken died on Monday.

Aiken was the sixth chancellor of the university. He served from 1993 to 2001.

He was responsible for the university's "Framework for the Future," a plan that worked to strengthen education and maintain competitive salaries for staff.

Aiken worked on Campaign Illinois, which was the first billion-dollar fundraising campaign for the campus. He also worked to improve the university's advising program and strengthen relationships with Champaign and Urbana.

The former chancellor is survived by his wife, Catherine, and daughter, Caroline.
