TAYLORVILLE, Ill. (WAND) — Kroger and SSI Services reached a settlement with Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul Thursday relating to the alleged improper handling and removal of asbestos from a grocery store in Taylorville.

In August 2022, Raoul filed a lawsuit against Kroger and SSI Services accusing the companies of conducting unsafe renovations by leaving chipped floor tiles that have asbestos in areas accessible to the public while the store was open.

SSI Services is a contracting company based in Indianapolis that worked with Kroger on renovations in the store at 201 East Bidwell Street in Taylorville.

Inhaling asbestos fibers can cause serious and deadly illnesses, including lung cancer, mesothelioma and asbestosis. There is no known safe exposure level to asbestos.

"This settlement holds Kroger and SSI Services accountable for jeopardizing the public's health by exposing shoppers and employees to dangerous materials containing asbestos," Raoul said. "I'm pleased that this case is resolved and that the abatement has been completed. I remain committed to protecting Illinois residents from those who would jeopardize their health, safety and the environment."

The settlement requires Kroger and SSI Services to avoid future violations and pay $108,000 in civil penalties.
