NEOGA, Ill. (WAND) — A man is dead after police said he was hit while filling his truck with gas on the side of I-57 Saturday afternoon.
It happened in the southbound lane near milepost 172 just after 3:30 p.m.
Illinois state police said a semi-truck was stopped on the right shoulder. The driver, a 31-year-old man, was outside the truck trying to fill it with gas when he was hit by a box truck.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to police, the box truck driver was not injured, but he was cited for improper lane usage and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.
The section of I-57 southbound from Neoga to Effingham was closed until around 9:53 p.m.
Police are still investigating the crash.
