SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — Over $6.7 million was awarded to the Sangamon Mass Transit District (SMTD) Wednesday.Â
Senators Dick Durbin (D-IL) and Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) announced $6,733,300 in federal funding was awarded to SMTD by the U.S. Department of Transportation.Â
The grant for buses and bus facilities will go towards building bus fueling stations throughout Springfield.
"Robust public transit makes all of our lives easier," said Durbin. "These federal funds provide Springfield's transit systems with the resources they need to deploy the latest technology and maintain reliable, safe, and affordable services for Illinoisans."
