BERWYN, Ill. (WAND) —The man wanted for a triple homicide in Mahomet has been shot and killed by police in Berwyn. 

The Cook County Bureau of Investigation identified the man as John R. Lyons, a 24-year-old from Westchester, Illinois.

According to the Berwyn Police Department, officers showed up to a home after a man with a gun was reported on Wednesday night. Lyons then fled officers on foot and forced his way into another home, where he shot two dogs.

Berwyn officers then found him fleeing into a yard. BPD said Lyons disobeyed verbal commands from officers to stop and started shooting. BPD fired back and killed him. No officers were hurt.

The Mahomet Police Department confirmed that Lyons was wanted for a triple homicide committed in Mahomet where three family members were killed earlier that Wednesday. The victims were identified as Janis L. Mason, 61, and Caleb M. Mason, 23, and Sara E. Mason, 26.
