MOUNT ZION, Ill. (WAND) — It's something you can't unsee, once you see it in front of your eyes.
The students at Mount Zion High School gathered outside Monday morning to watch a car crash reenactment unfold.
The scene followed four high schoolers in one vehicle, colliding headfirst into another with a family of three inside.
The Junior class watched as EMTs rushed critically injured passengers into the ambulance. One was airlifted to a trauma center, one pronounced dead at the scene.
Both the fire and police departments played out the realistic scenario, and the students were also able to hear from parents and families who lost their own children to impaired driving.Â
"This is something that's hard to replicate in the classroom" says teacher Kyle Osborne, who helped organize the event with ThinkFirst and Students Against Destructive Decisions. "I think to see the impact of not only somebody that's been killed, but also the impact on the families of somebody that they lost...those are things I don't think kids normally think about."
The school hopes the reenactment helps to remind their students to make smart decisions on the road and think about the consequences of impaired driving.Â
