Israel rejects Trump's Gaza plan, more details emerge on the Strait of Hormuz and other Mideast news
Israel’s prime minister is rejecting President Donald Trump’s announced deal for Gaza, insisting Israeli forces won’t withdraw from the Palestinian territory until the Hamas militant group disarms. Meanwhile, more details are emerging on Iran and Oman’s temporary deal to manage the Strait of Hormuz, but Tehran suggests that vessels linked to “hostile countries” will be barred from the waterway. Elsewhere, Yemen’s Iranian-backed Houthi rebels have targeted a crucial Yemeni government-held port on the Red Sea and attacked an oil facility in Saudi Arabia. A Houthi spokesperson says Sunday's attacks were in response to Saudi drones breaching Yemen’s airspace.
Health officials urge caution for Gulf Coast beachgoers during surge of deadly bacterial infections
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Health officials in Louisiana are urging beachgoers to take precautions during a summertime surge in infections from a flesh-eating bacteria. Louisiana has confirmed nine cases so far this year of Vibrio vulnificus, which is found in warm coastal waters. All were hospitalized, and five died. The numbers are above average. Vibrio bacteria thrive in warm seawater, especially in the brackish mix of fresh and saltwater found in estuaries and lagoons. Most infections are reported from May to October, mostly along the U.S. Gulf Coast. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says Vibrio vulnificus is the most deadly Vibrio bacteria, killing as many as one in five people infected.
Trump's immigration crackdown looms over Minnesota's bruising Senate primary
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Democratic Senate primary in Minnesota is heating up and immigration has become a central issue. Tuesday's election is between Angie Craig, a congresswoman, and Peggy Flanagan, the state's lieutenant governor. Craig once voted for tighter immigration enforcement but has expressed regret for that decision. Flanagan has criticized Craig for not standing firmly against the Trump administration. Craig has a history of winning tough races and emphasizes her ability to connect with diverse voters. Flanagan is backed by progressive voters and has focused on grassroots funding and policies such as Medicare for All. Both candidates are vying for support in a divided Democratic Party.

The entire community of Summerland, home to about 12,000 people, was ordered evacuated overnight, along with about 8,000 people in and around nearby Peachland. Officials had not determined how many homes were destroyed.

Many immigrants face deportation without a lawyer at their side in court. This program tries to help
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — A program run by a legal nonprofit aims to help immigrants as they navigate the immigration court system in California's capital. The stakes are high during President Donald Trump's second term as courts play a key role in his mass deportation agenda. Many immigrants can't afford a private lawyer and they can face long waits for nonprofit legal assistance. Data shows that having a lawyer significantly increases success in court. The lawyer who coordinates the program in Sacramento often encounters people who've been scammed by fake lawyers. She emphasizes the importance of detailed asylum applications and guides immigrants through complex legal procedures.
Watchdog for $46 billion tribal gambling industry can't enforce the law without a chairperson
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — The Iowa Tribe of Oklahoma opened its new Harrah’s-branded casino in April. But plans for Harrah’s to take over casino management are stalled because of a vacancy at a federal watchdog. The National Indian Gaming Commission hasn't had a chairperson since January and President Donald Trump has yet to nominate a replacement. That’s left the commission unable to carry out enforcement duties or management deals like the one in Oklahoma. Industry leaders say the vacancy risks delaying business deals and weakening oversight. It also deprives tribes of a key advocate as prediction markets threaten to encroach on the $46 billion tribal gambling industry.
