(WAND) — Has garlic breath got you covering your face? A professor of food science and technology at The Ohio State University, has found that yogurt may be the next go-to garlic breath remedy.

The protein in yogurt is particularly effective at trapping garlic odors, leading her to suggest high-protein foods may one day be formulated specifically to fight garlic breath. Professor Sheryl Barringer has a history of identifying foods that can combat garlic breath, among them apples, mint leaves and lettuce, thanks to their enzymes and phenolic compounds that snuff out the sulfur-based compounds that cause garlic’s persistent smell.

While mints or gum only cover up the odor, certain foods actually neutralize the odor – allowing consumers to enjoy garlic’s flavor in a meal and then quickly eat a yogurt or an apple to prevent garlic breath.
