SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) - A man convicted of shooting an Illinois State Trooper has yet to be sentenced.
A jury convicted Cristobal Santana in August 2025 for shooting ISP Trooper Kody Chapman-Green in October 2023.
After the jury reached its verdict, court records indicated that in December 2025, Santana asked the court to represent himself moving forward. The public defender's office was discharged from the case.
Santana has filed a motion for a new trial.
During Tuesday's short hearing, the court gave the State's Attorney's Office until March 6 to respond to Santana's motions. His potential sentencing date is set for April.
Santana shot trooper Kody Chapman-Green in October 2023. ISP said Chapman-Green was conducting a traffic stop when Santana got out of his car and started shooting. The trooper's dash camera showed the moments shots were fired. ISP said Santana hit the trooper in the head several times with his gun, then returned to his car and drove away.
