Police: Man hid backpack with drugs, weapon in it during chase

DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) – Police say a man threw away a backpack containing drugs and a weapon during a chase.

Officers say they stopped a black Dodge Caliber on Monday evening in the 1200 block of North Monroe Street for a traffic violation. They say a passenger got out of the car and ran westbound from police while holding a red and black backpack.

Police say a witness told them they watched Blake Taylor, 28, hide the backpack behind a Leafland Avenue address. They recovered it and found two ounces of marijuana inside, along with plastic bags they say might have been used to sell the drugs and a Clerke .22 revolver.

Taylor has two past convictions on his record for robbery and armed robbery with a firearm. Police say he also has a pending charge for meth possession.

His new charges include armed habitual criminal, armed violence, possession of a weapon by a felon, resisting a police officer and manufacture/delivery of cannabis. His bond is set at $250,000 in Macon County.
